Our last weeks on Hawai'i
Javel,
This is our last blog from Hawaii. It's been a couple months since the last one but we have been super busy with school and visits from a bunch of friends from Norway!
So what is new. We finished school the first week of may, and despite all the visitors the exams went well. Our dissertation paper wasn't due until May 31st, and since we never finish assignments ahead of time, we had to spend the last days of May to make the final adjustments. But with the help of Anne Hege we turned it in on time - so now (hopefully) we have a bachelor degree!

"Graduation" for the student abroad students
The first visit arrived at the end of March - Jeanette and Cato!. The spent three weeks with us, and since we were busy with school most of the time with them were spent at the beach. We tried to introduce them to Waikiki's night life but every time they magically disappeared before we enterd any of the clubs;) We also took them around the island, including a must visit to the lost beach and pipeline beach. On their last night (while we were at a friend's b-day party) they got engaged at the beach!!!!!!! GRATULERE!!!!!

A week after they left our next visitors came, Christine and Thu. They arrived just in time to join in on the Swedish gold and white party and the Kokua festival! The Kokua festival was amazing, we spent the whole day in a park with good company, pizza, beer and great music from different artists, among them Jack Johnson. The girls also got the mandatory tour around the island, and as an extra bonus we visited Pearl HarborJ. They only stayed with us for 9 days but it was a lot of fun!. Thanks for helping us with some school work!

Two days after our second visitors left a new sister arrived, Kristin and Svein. We were now in the middle of our finals week, so the two of them had to entertain themselves for the first week. The little time we were able to spend with them were spent at the beach or at the dinner table. We also made time for a Jason Mraz concert and needless to say it was fantastic! The evening after our last exam Eystein and Erling arrived and less than 24 hours later Geggi and Anders arrived just in time for Merethe's 25th birthday party. Now we were living 9 people in a two bedroom apartment! Sweet! The party was a success; we were around 30 people celebrating the still young Merethe! The next two weeks we spent hanging on the beach, partying and just having a blast.
Someone got hit....

B-day present from E&E
The boys and Kristin also got the mandatory trip, but with a twist. We rented a big red pickup, so that we could stash all the boys in the back (in Hawaii you're allowed to drive with as many people as you can fit on the back of the car) while the girls and Erling (the special kid) sat comfortably inside the car. In order to keep track of the group, the travel guides (MnM) and their assistant (FP) bought everyone a baby blue hang loose caps!. Before getting into the car they also got their lunch bag which included a sandwich, juice, chips and of course a bag of M&M's!

Tha Gang

Ukulele at the beach...
Our first stop was the lost beach, were we saw a lot of turtles - Anders was in heaven. He even went for a swim with them. Next stop was pipeline beach. Some of the group camped under a tree, due to some raindrops, but the more experienced beach goers headed down to the beach. We know that in Hawaii it only rains for 10 minutes!!!! After this we drove around the island, crossed the mountain twice - and sadly for the guys in the back (especially Geggi) it rained quite a lot, and needless to say some of them got soaked. But it was all fixed with a stop at Jack in the Box before we headed home.
Next day Kristin and Svein left - both with new tattoos and a bit stressed after oversleeping. Some party goers luckily got home in time to wake them up!
We also took the guys to Hawaiian water adventure park - super fun. We all became 12 years again and tried every ride the park offered. Geggi and Erling also got to work out their biceps pulling the whole group numerous times around in the lazy river. As a perfect ending to the night we took them to Magoos (Varsity) with $7 for a pitcher of beer (Eystein was in Heaven) and ended up on Nashville, a western inspired bar were Geggi got to show everyone his sexy dance. Damn was that a hot dance!
The guys also got to celebrate 17th of May with us, bbq at the beach. There even was a small parade and a photo session. The day was ended with a trip on town, this time Rum fire and maddog.

Lucky Eystein and Erling also got to experience moose, our favorite bar. It was the perfect ending of their visit and Fanny's good bye dinner/party.
We now had less than 2 weeks left on Hawaii. After cleaning out our apartment we moved in with Keoki. He took us camping on North Shore on the weekend. Amazing day spent with locals, bbq'ing, throwing horse shoes, chilling with a beer and listening to a live band. After the consert we introduced some lucky souls to the pyramide (drinking game). A good night. The next day we spent on sunset beach - our last day on North Shore.

Monday morning we left for Kauai. After getting our car we drove to Hawaii`s Grand Canyon, and exhausted after an early rise and traveling we checked into our hotel and spent the rest of the evening in bed with take out and movies. Next day we went on a four miles hike in Na Pali coast. Stunning nature and a good workout. On our last day on Kauai we rented a kayak and paddled up a river and hiked two miles to a waterfall.
Thursday morning we headed for Maui. After checking into our hostel (Marianne was quite disappointed since she had been told that it was like a hotel - NOT)We had to share room with two other guys, one of them an old Japanese who snored like a thunderstorm. The first day we drove around the upper part of the island, chilled at a nice beach and did some sightseeing. The second day Vikor (a swedish friend) arrived and we drove along the road to Hana 2.5 hours of winding road to get to a waterfall. Of course it was a four mile hike, but part of it went through a super cool bamboo forest and the 400` waterfall was stunning. Our third day at Maui we hiked Haleakala crater - a 12 miles ( 2 MIL) hike. We started going down the inside of the crater - 4 miles down ward walk in sand. After a short lunch break we continued to walk across the crater for another 5 miles. The scenery was breathtaking - some places looked like the moon and others had grass and flowers. The last part of the hike went up the crated. Up up up for 3 miles - a bit tiresome doing all the cross backs, but not far as hard as we expected. At the top, after waiting for the rest of the group we drove up to a lookout point where we watched the sunset. The pain in the legs and the buttocks started sneaking in at this point.

Bamboo forest

Drinking water and stretching after finishing the 12 miles hike:)
Our last day on Maui we spent tanning on a beach - Big Beach. Next to big beach lies little beach a hippie/nudist beach and since we are a bit curious we went for a peek!
Back on Oahu we had one day left. Most of the day went by with gift/souvenir shopping and some tanning on the beach. We saw our last sun set at Fort de Russy and the evening we spent at Keoki?s stepdads boat, drinking red wine eating poke and listening to ukulele! The perfect ending to a perfect year in paradise.

After a tearful goodbye we headed for mainland. We arrived in LA 4.30 pm and around 6.30 pm we were on our way to San Francisco. The drive was looooong. Exhausted after almost no sleep the night before and the drive we arrived at the hotel around 2 am. The next morning we had to get up as early as 6.30 am. - we had booked tickets to Alcatraz at 9. We also visited fisherman?s wharf and drove up and down different streets to find the famous California Ave with the steep hill. Then we headed for Santa Cruz, a beautiful beach town. Got to bed quite early to catch up on some sleep. The next day we went to the beach. It was COLD, we miss Hawaii! Coming back to COLD Norway is going to be hard. Anyways we drove further down the coast to Santa Barbara and spent the night here, before driving to San Diego the next day. Now we`re in Santa Fe in LA, gonna stay here for 3 days before we start our journy home on tuesday!!!!!
Until then take care, see you all in 4 days!
Ps: We arrive at Sola June 18th, 15.30!!!! Be there or be square! (Tihi)

Fanny we miss you! BTW this is for you Siren;)

Life goes on in Hawai'i
Latley we have been to busy to blog, so guess it's time for an update!
After all our visitors left in january we had two weeks until the next came. This time it was Merethe's friend Tove! She spent two weeks here, and they went by fast.

School has started again and luckily our schedule is better than last semester. Merethe has school only 3 days a week and their all evening classes - 5.pm to 8.pm. Marianne's schedule is a bit worse, tuesday and thursday she has to get up at 7.am. And that is harder than expected! Wednesday and friday are evening clases.
Same as last year there are a lot of quizes, exams, papers and presentations..We are also writing our dissertaion paper about student's alcohol consum! hehe..We assume that it is quite high here!!!:)
Our new years resoultions was to eat less candy, work out, surf, power-walking and cut down on the partying! So far we have been quite good following these!!!! yeah:)
Last saturday we decided to go to north shore. We spent the day at the beach, and when we returned to our car we found out that someone had decided to break one of the windows. This meant calling the police so that we could get a written report, and then driving to the car rental place to change cars. In the evening we were going to a friends place for dinner, and due to the broken window we got there a bit late. All in all it was a sinking saturday:)

Last week we went on a hike called 7 bridges (we only saw/counted 4). The hike in it self was quite easy, no big ascents. The hike took us to some waterfalls, through a rainforest. We had been told that when reaching the waterfalls we had to strip down to our bikinies and climbe them. This might sound easy, but trust us, it was scary as hell. The first waterfall was about 30 feet high and the second one was about 100 feet high. To climb them you only had the help of a rope, which is kind of scary considering the fact that if you loose the grip the chance of dying is good. Anyway, brave as we are we were the second and third person to go up. All the time we believed that the hike was gonna continue after this, but when all 17 hikers had reached the top, it was explaind that this was the end of the hike. Now it was time to climb down the dredded rope. It was terrible. You had no idea where to put your feets, sometimes there were no places to put you feet - i guess you get the point! Down from the 100 feet waterfall we decided that we were gonna try and climbe down the last one through a bambus forrest. This was not the smartest chioce we have made. The thing is, there was no trial, and it was quite tricky to get through the mudd and the dense bambu trees, barfeet in our bikinis. At one point we got stuck and the only sligthly possible way to get down was to try and get hold of some bambues and slide down. This showed to be impossible so Merethe who was going first, a bit stressed with nothing to hold onto and sliding in the mudd, called out to Marianne: "Har du tag, har du tag!!!!!" "Ja, eg har tag" " Ok, da tar e tag i foten din" So that is what helped us get down. Good for us that we were the only one who understood norwegian.

On friday we went to a birthday/superhero party in Kailua, a town on the west side, with a friend of ours. Fanny had decided long ago that she wanted to dress up as charlies angles. So Marianne became Nat (camron Diaz), Fanny Became Dylan (Drew Barrymor) and Merethe Became Alex (Lucy Liu). Making her look asian was harder than we expected. First we bought a blond wig which we tried to color black. It took long time and in the end the wig was still blond. This was about two houres before Mark was picking us up. Desperate we called some salonges and eventually found a black wig that wasn't to expensive.
The party was really fun, and we meet lot`s of funny people.

Trying to color a blond wig black! Charlie`s Angels
That`s all for now!

Christmas holliday
So far 2008 have been chill and a lot of fun!
But wait, lets start with "romjulen" - the days between christmas and new years!
After som days with partying we spent a couple of days on the sofa, relaxing:) The 29th a friend of Merethe, Ingunn came to visit. And she brought Norveiga (cheese)..yee:)
The new year was celebrated at our place with good food and a small party that grew bigger as the houres past by. At 00.00 we all went to the beach and watched the fireworks, which was quite dissapointing. We had been told that Waikiki had one of the best fireworks in the world. Not true..even Sandnes has a better! But it was a really cool experience to be at the beach and not in cold Norway:) The rest of the night was spent on town whit good friends.
Btw..Happy new year to everybody!!!

New Year, and the wonderful fireworks;)
As the good hosts we are we rented a car and showed Ingunn around the Island. We went hiking to Diamond head, where you can see all of Waikiki, visited the lost beach, saw a surf competition at north shore, and went horseback riding. We were all a bit dissapointed, due to tha fact that we were not allowed to run with the horses. Everyone had to stay in line, which is boring for two houres, but the scenery was amazing, and we got to see some movie sets from Jurresic Park, Godzilla, 50 first dates etc. Ingunn, Kenny and Merethe also took a dip with a bunch of Galapagos sharks - in a cage ofcourse, while Marianne who was to scared slept in the car. Cool but cold experience. We also spent some days just laying on the beach working on our tan:D

The 8th of january Fanny - the swedish girl moved in with us. Yes, we have a new roomie. At this point the appartment was packed with people, MnM, Kenny, Ingunn, Mads and his friend and Fanny. But it was only for a couple of days. Then all the visitors left! Now it's only MnM, Mads and Fanny!
And then we met Fred..a portugees tattoer/surfer. He invited us up for a barberque at North shore, which was a nice change to dinner in #801. North shore is sooo laid back compared to all the noise and tourists in Waikiki. The guys had made a nice dinner and the evening was spent playing kings cup, and for some a dip in the jacuzzi. Fred ,or his friend Tim had some bikes so the next day we biked around north shore looking at the big waves (25 - 35 feet), amazing! We had lots of fun riding the bikes, just crusing and on shift pulling Fred who was skatboarding. We also went for a hike to a waterfall and got to see all the different species of trees and flowers that excist on Hawaii. Guess who was bitten by mosquitos..!

Merethe skateboarding! haha..she needs more practice!!

On tuesday it's back to school again. We are actually looking forward to it.(Marianne more than Merethe) After over a month of vacation it's going to be great to have something useful to do again. Probably gonna regret writing this after a week.
Since almost all our friends have left, we decided to go out to mooses to make some new ones! Tuesday was the day, and ooooh what a night. We didn't make any new friends, on the opposit we left the place before closing time exhausted after being picked up one to many times. The guys were like mosquitos, swarming around us and pretty anoying. The tried everyting from buing us roses, shots, drinks and even used lines from the game - which sadly for them all of us have read! But all in all it was fun and a big selfesteem boost!!!!!!:D

News from Hawai'i
Javel! It's over a month since the last time we posted a blog, actually almost 2 months, and much has happend since then. First of all school is finally done:) Yeah! 5 weeks off, lovely! Our exams went ok and some actually better than expected (internnational trade and finance) :)
Marianne turned 23 the 2nd of december so a party was a must.! Our white floor-carpet is now full of black and red spots, due to jelly shots and red wine! The best part of the night was the present, gift certificate for skydiving (14000ft) :)

The birthday girls:) Marianne got a raindeer for her birthday:)
In mid december Kenny came to visit us! He spent one day with us in Waikiki before he had to go to North Shore where Billabongs Pipeline Masters was going on. We planned months ago to join him there for a week and stay in a hostel, but first we had to attend a going away party for all our friends that were leaving Hawaii and going back Germany! The day after the party we rented a car. MnM, Fanny and Siren were once again on their way to North Shore! This time no camping, but looking at surfer-hunks:) On the drive up, Marianne fell asleep and once again we took a wrong turn. This meant a 30 min detour. Due to this we chose to drive a new road up to North Shore through small towns and forests. Needless to say, we arrived pretty late at North shore. After picking up Kenny we drove to a mexican restaurant where we had an amazing meal before going to a party/concert! Next morning we woke up early in a hot room, Merethe with a cold and lack of sleep.
Marianne and Fanny went to Dillingham Airfield to go skydiving, while Merethe and Siren watched TV cause of heavy rain showers.

When the girls came back it was stikk raining and the surf-contest was off due to small waves. What to do in north shore when it's raining? Nothing for us girls..roumers said that waikiki was sunny, and an hour later with a refund (Merethe has not recieved hers)for the rooms we were on our way back home:) Home sweet clean chill home!
We had rented the car for a week so on tuesday we once more drove up to north shore. This time to see the surf-contest. MnM and Fanny were on their way at 7 in the morning! It was a lovely day on a packed beach with heaps of hunks and pro surfers ripping the waves:) It was epic:):):)

After a perfect day at the beach it was time for a margarita party/going away party for our good friend Siren!
We miss u a lot!
Christmas in Hawaii
We have officially done everything in our power to make this christmas as norwegian as possible in hawaii! Our living room is decorated with a real christmas-tree, christmas star in the window, and a lot of other decorations! We even made christmas-calender to each other!:) The only thing we were missing was snow! The day before christmas eve we watched home alone 1 and 2 to get prepared for christmas eve:) Christmas eve was a lovely day..we started with a big breakfast with everything from salmon, roast-beef and home made bread:) A couple of hours later we ate porrage:) And while the turkey was roasting in the oven we took a short beachwalk before we went back and prepared the rest of the food! It was delicious:) Merethe was the lucky one that got the almond in the ricecream:) Kenny tried cheating his way to the price by putting his own almond in the riskrem! The fact that he earlier told us that this is a christmas-tradition for him made him pretty unthrustworthy.
Then we opend presents and played monopoly-surfers edition! (present from Kenny) :)

Now we are going surfing:)

Aloha MnM
Mele Kalikimaka
So far we have eaten breakfast and grøt, and the turkey is ready in a couple of hours. In good norwegian christmas tradition we have watched tre nøtter til askepott (three nuts for cindarella), home alone 1 +2 and a surf movie!

Rocking around the christmas tree, have a happy holiday!

Blog from last months is on the way!

Big Island!
Javel! Since we have some international readers it's time to make the blog English! After 4 months here our English writing-skills should be good enough to do so! :)
While we are staying in Hawaii our plan is to visit at least 6 of the 8 islands that Hawaii consist of.

The trip started with a detour due to Siren excellent map reading skills. She was supposed to lead us in to Kona so we could get some breakfast., but after driving 15 min in the wrong direction we discovered that Kona was the other way. After a delicious breakfast at a diner we bumped in to a small market, and of course we left some money there!

At the market
Next stop was supposed to be Kona coffee plantation but this time absent-minded Siren lead us to a brewery for Kona beer, not coffee. (But the tour had already started) Hehe.. Siren was now officially banned from giving directions.
With Marianne reading the map we decided to go horsebackriding. We drove to a ranch in the northern part of the island where we went on a 1,5 hours trail through astonishing nature.

Siren and Merethe and our mini-van:) Nice clothes!?

We decided to spend the night in the beautiful town of Kona and found a small hotel called Islander Inn. 5 girls in one room with two beds! Before going to bed after a long day, we had to refill our stomach with some food. Greek was the crave. The food was really good, but the service awful..we left the restaurant without giving tips!:0 Since we were in Kona we felt that we had to try Kona beer so went to Hooters (had to check out the place) and drank a kind of sweet beer with a chilly taste. A bit tipsy after only one beer we went to sleep at 10.p.m. MnM in the little bed, and Siren, Fanny and Marianne in the big bed.

Next day started with a delicious breakfast at "Lava java", a chill, laid-back breakefast place by the sea. The plan for the day was made and our first stop was a coffee plantation. Since the plantation we were supposed to go to yesterday was closed on Saturdays we decided to look for a new one on the way to the volcano. We found one called Bay view, where we met a German man (the Germans are everywhere) who told us about coffee production. Merethe also got to see her first spider in Hawaii (Smily face spider). And it was disgusting! Our next plan was to see the green beach in the south of the island but on the way we met some people that told us that it was quite a hike. This didn't fit into our time-schedule so we decided to take a look at the view from the southest point and go to the black beach instead.

The big spider! Are we in Denmark?

Somebody is steeling black sand! :0
Next on the list was the volcano national park. The main goal was to spot some lava, but to our disappointment (especially for Fanny and Merethe) we didn¨t see any due to alot of clouds! But we got to see some other interesting things like craters, rifts, dried lava flows, lava tube etc. It was really cool.

We spent the night in Hilo which is the "big" city on the island. Normally you assume that a big city offers various bars and restaurants. But the few they had closed at 10.30 and we were hungry!! Jack in the box came to our rescue!:) The weather in Hilo was rain, rain and pouring rain. We learned later from the people working at the hostel that Hilo has rain 267 days a year! Like Norway!

Next day started with a pancake breakfast at Ken's pancake house. This place was packed with people, obviously it is a trend here to eat breakfast out! Afterwards we took a short visit to Manua Loa visitor center. Manua Loa is the producer of macadamia nuts, and they are really delicious! We also visited rainbow-falls and Akaka Falls. Awesome waterfalls and a huge tree.

We found a candyshop in Hilo:)

Yes, we are in America!
After a busy weekend and a lot of fun we got the best end of the trip at the airport. Live music and hula-dancers!:)
And now it`s back to reality! School and exams! Hopefully there will be some turkey on thanksgiving and some tanning at the beach during the holiday!
Happy thanksgiving!
Aloha MnM
2 fun weeks

Lost stranda

Merethe prove a lure marianne uti Fanny @ mojitinight Marianne + tyggis
Teit!
Hele sist uke var alkohol-fri! Can you belive it!?

Haape du faar ein straalanes dag hjemme i Norge!

Such a Perfect Day
Javel! Lordag va den perfekte dagen! Dagen begynte med at me stod opp kl 06.15 for aa gjore oss klar til surfe-time kl 07.00.

Greit for oss! Ganske kult! Skjelvne i beina og sultne dro vi paa jack in the box:) mmm..lovely!

Steffen

Sinnsykt glatt paa steinene!!

Aloha mnm
Sporty!

(Curly fries er verdens beste pommes frites fra Jack in the box).

Fly Junkfood lunsj i regnet!

Kanskje surfe for forste gang:)

Michael og Max Steffen, Olli,MnM og ein t tysker

Javel!

Hehe. Alle er veldig imponert over engelsken vår!!!!! Ganske artig opplevelse.
.hahahah
For siste gang, hvis noen vil ha kort, brev eller annen post, legg inn adressen din/deres!
Aloha MnM
